Paul,
As I was surfing the web I noticed that under an article in Google that stated Michael Phelp"s great grandfather is one of the famous Spence Brothers who were Olympic swimmers in the 1920 and 30s. How can I verify this info as I am granddaughter of Wally Spence who was part of that famous swimming family. It would be very helpful to me if I can get some concrete evidence before I try to contact the Phelps family.

Thanks for all your help .

Paul McMullen,
I appreciate your feedback. My son will always have the choice, he is very strong minded and I am not worried about him being pushed into anything. I ask him on a regular basis if he still wants to swim on the team and he is consistantly says YES!

Paul McMullen,
Thanks for this article on Michael Phelps. I love telling my ADHD son stories about guys he could relate to.

Kim Harris,
Wow, that´s a tall order for a little guy. Sounds quite daunting. I don´t know what Debbie Phelps would say. But I would really make an effort to make sure he´s making his own choices, or at least, that he feels that way. That´s my two cents.

i have an 8 yr. old son.he too is a very good swimmer he goes to the ymca.several people who have seen him swim have told my mother how great of a swimmer he is. we really didnt think nothing of this swimming professionally. we came across your articles, and thought to ourselves wow this sound like my son!!!We are family who come from Abilene,T.X. we have no history in our family on swimming but we are a family of musicians. he was learning how to play the guitar but he lost intrest in it. he also can draw very well. but that will make him lose concentration in school.he would draw when he was suppose to be doing school work.so we figure this swimming thing might be it for him cause he loves to swim and hasnt lost intrest in it.we have tried baseball and he doesnt like it either!he's always asking children if they want to race and everybody is so tired he is the only one that can keep going on and on. just watching him tires me out!!!lol!!!!but i would like to talk with debbie phelps.i thought maybe she could give an idea or two. to let me know what she thinks.his pediatrician says theres nothing more he can do for him he has tried all the medications he can give him and nothing is working. im in need of help, and so is my son!!to you michael phelps keep up the good work you set a good example for all ADD and ADHD kids!!!

thank you for your time,

I have am 8 year old son who is also ADD and is on the swim team at American Heritage School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is very good and I am expecting that perhaps he to may be a future Olympian. He also comes from a swimming family, his Great Grandfather is one of the Spence Brothers they where world class competitors in 1920 and 1930's. Some of the Spence techniques such as turns though modified, remain in use today. His Great Grandfather Wally Spence was inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year as Mark Spitz. I would love to have an opportunity to talk to Debbie Phelps to find out how it is she kept Michael on track. It is especially important to myself and my family because of our history in the swimming world. If you could either forward my information to her or send me hers it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

This almost brought tears to my eyes. There are so many times as a parent you just want people, especially your child's teachers, to understand what will make all the difference in the world!

How sad that other parents would not want their child to play with an ADHD child. The general public so needs to learn more about ADHD. Our ADHD children are not contagious. They're just normal boys and girls who happen to be wired differently.
